不顧西班牙中央政府禁令，加泰隆尼亞自治區執意舉行獨立公投，警察與投票者爆發衝突，造成超過800人受傷。對於加泰隆尼亞獨立公投引發的紛爭，歐盟各國始終冷漠看待。
加泰隆尼亞獨立公投之前，就遭到歐盟反對。歐洲議會議長塔加尼（Antonio Tajani）表示，加泰隆尼亞如果獨立，是自外於歐盟，因為違反歐盟成員國的憲法，就是違反歐盟的合法架構。
西班牙政府主張，加泰隆尼亞的公投違反1978 年的憲法，這套憲法是西班牙民主的基石，也保證西班牙的主權。歐洲議會也以相關爭議屬於西班牙內政、尊重西班牙法律為由，拒絕介入紛爭。
至今歐盟大國領袖都未曾對加泰隆尼亞獨立公投發表評論，只有同樣爭取獨立的蘇格蘭首席大臣施特金（Nicola Sturgeon）在推特(Twitter)發文表示，部分加泰套房飯店隆尼亞的影像令人震驚，完全是不必要的暴力。他說，「讓人民投票吧。」
加泰隆尼亞自治區通過的公投法規定，如果公投通過獨立，48小時內就可宣告獨立，但是目前還未知自治區政府會有何種作為。加泰隆尼亞自治區主席普伊格蒙特（Carles Puigdemont）先前接受媒體訪問表示，「一定會有過渡期，不可能馬上獨立。」
他也批評歐盟對此漠不關心。支持獨立的團體和工會則呼籲3日在加泰隆尼亞發動大罷工。
